Whether it is used by smoking, sniffing or chewing, it is clear that people have enjoyed tobacco for centuries. Here you will read about the history of tobacco, from the first cigarette to tobacco consumption with glo™.
WHERE DOES THE TOBACCO COME FROM?
It is agreed that tobacco has been around since the 14th or 15th century. The Indians were the first to know how to grow and use tobacco. At that time, tobacco was mainly used as a smoke-producing substance in spiritual rituals, not as a stimulant as it is today. Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer and navigator, discovered tobacco in 1492 during his first encounter with people from South America. When he returned to Europe, he brought tobacco with him as a souvenir.
SINCE WHEN HAVE CIGARETTES BEEN AROUND?
In Europe, tobacco was first cultivated as a medicinal plant and was primarily smoked. It took some time before tobacco was used for pleasure. The first cigarette was produced around 1850, but there were no proper cigarette companies at that time. Instead, the first cigarette was made in cigar factories. Workers would collect tobacco scraps and wrap them in paper.
Even into the 20th century, most tobacco was imported from America to northern Europe. The warm, humid environment in sailing ships was ideal and excellent for maturing the tobacco leaves in wooden barrels. In those days, the sailors were on the move for at least three months. Even today, the maturing process of tobacco takes about that long.
